Artist residency: Meeting Brno festival

Are you a visual artist or writer from Germany? Does your work deal with the Czech-German relations, history and memory, or topics such as multicultural society, mechanisms of radicalisation, homogenity or otherness, the loss and the finding of home? Then keep on reading, Brno has some residencies lined up for you! In cooperation with the Meeting Brno festival the Dům umění města Brna arts center is introducing an artist-in-residence program for a visual artist in April and May 2017, as well as a residence for a German writer over the course of May 2017!

The artworks produced during the stays will be publicly presented within the Meeting Brno festival, either as an distinct exhibition and performance in public space or a bilingual reading.

If you are a visual artist, then your stay lasts over the course of April and May 2017. During the first month you get to fully concentrate on your work and get to know Brno’s art scene. In May your exhibition in the Galerie 99, run by Dům umění města Brna, is due to be opened, presumably accompanied by commentated tours and a personal encounter with the public. You will have the teams of Meeting Brno as well as the arts center to your disposal, as well as the residence-apartment and the atelier of Dům umění.

If you are a writer, your stay lasts over the course of May 2017. The outcome of the stay will be a bilingual public presentation of a text that was written in this period of time. During the stay you will have a translator at hand who will prepare a Czech version of your texts and participate on the public reading. You will also have the teams of Meeting Brno and the arts center at your disposal, as well as the residence apartment and the atelier of Dům umění.

You can send your application until the 10th of January 2017 in electronic form to info@meetingbrno.cz. Your application should include a curriculum vitae as well as a motivational letter detailing: your interest in the stay in Brno and the focus of your work, as well as your idea of how your work could be further developed in Brno. It is recommended to file the application in English, yet it is possible to apply in German or Czech too. The common language of the program is English, if necessary German. The selection among the applicants and their notification will be completed by the 31st January 2017.

The festival took place in may 2016 for the first time, basing upon the 2015 project Rok smířen/ Year of Reconciliation. In Brno, the end of World War II and the victims of the NS terror regime were remembered in a wider context. Now the event organizers want to address questions of Brno’s multicultural history, combining them with more recent topics.
